Livestock also feed on them, which boosts their strength.When the chickpea crop grows, its tender shoots are also eaten with great relish.Chickpeas can be exported to earn foreign exchange, but due to lack of government attention, it remains difficult to capitalize on this opportunity.If production increases, unemployment will also decrease because processing the crop requires labor.
\nIf chickpeas are cultivated according to proper agricultural principles, many benefits can be gained. In rain-fed(barani)areas, the best time for sowing is from mid-October to mid-November.Timely sowing is essential for better yields.Instead of broadcasting, the drill method should be used for sowing.Rows should be kept 1 to 1.5 feet apart.
\nChickpeas require more phosphorus than nitrogen. The use of zinc and sulfur also increases yield. Weeds must be removed for higher production. Farmers should consult agricultural experts and spray appropriate herbicides. If water is available, the first irrigation should be done before flowering and the second during the flowering stage. Excess water is harmful, as standing water damages the crop. Chickpeas do not tolerate high moisture well.
\nThe crop is also attacked by termites, American bollworm, and wilt disease.To control termites and other pests, and to protect against wilt, farmers should consult experts and apply proper pesticides.
