The ongoing war between Israel and Iran is often framed through security, military, and ideological lenses. Even though these factors are important to explicate the dynamics of conflict, a closer examination reveals that the economic perspective, strategic trade routes, supply chain management, leadership-driven policies, and regional integration are equally pertinent to understanding the far-reaching geopolitical implications of the Israel-Iran conflict. Revisiting the conflict through these interconnected variables provides a holistic view in order to understand the consequences for West Asia and the global economy.
\nThe dynamics of contemporary geopolitics focus on the symbiotic relationship between security and the economy. The region of West Asia possesses abundant reserves of hydrocarbons that have continuously reshaped international strategic calculations since the end of the Second World War. Although Israel is not a major oil-producing country, it has emerged as a pivotal player in the energy sector through the discovery of natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean. Developments in the exploration of natural resources have increased the strategic cost of armed conflict, which adversely impacts maritime resources, economic corridors and investments.
\nThe economic dimension becomes more important when considering the strategic value of the Strait of Hormuz. Geography rules the destiny of the West Asian region. This narrow maritime passage facilitates the movement of a substantial proportion of liquefied natural gas and global oil supplies. As a critical energy chokepoint, any disruption in the flow of gas and oil due to armed conflict involving Iran, Israel or regional allies raises concerns about the security of the route. The indirect impacts of this disruption have the potential to increase energy prices, maritime cargo insurance costs and uncertainty in global stock exchanges. The conflict has distracted Arab states with security concerns and delayed necessary domestic reforms that directly affect citizens.
\nThe result of war may change who controls the major supply routes, but it cannot offset the importance of the strategic bond between geography and the economy. The implications of regional conflict extend beyond the Arab states. The contemporary economic-industrial complex (EIC) relies on complex networks in which energy, raw materials, goods and technology are transported across continents. Regional conflicts create significant vulnerabilities within global supply chains. For those developing countries that are dependent on the import of oil and gas, fluctuations in prices may lead to fiscal pressures, trade deficits, and slow economic growth. Thus, the impact of war extends beyond the battlefield and affects the global economic ecosystem.
\nAmid the conflict, the strategic logic of the Abraham Accords demands attention. The Abraham Accords introduced a framework that sought to normalise relations between Israel and several Arab states. Apart from its diplomatic connotations, the economic vision behind the Accords cannot be overlooked. The Accords aimed to foster technological cooperation, investment, trade, and connectivity projects linking Israel, Arab states, and global markets. In this context, the Abraham Accords not only focus on political objectives, but also contain an economic strategy to integrate markets and attract foreign investment. The contemporary conflict between Israel and Iran threatens many of these aspirations; trade routes become vulnerable and large-scale infrastructure projects are delayed. The strategic and economic logic envisioned behind the Abraham Accords is challenged by the conflict, which not only threatens the narrative of \u201cGreater Israel\u201d, but also illustrates the perceptual connection between geopolitical vision and economic integration. The Israel-Iran conflict challenges confidence in emerging regional economic projects. Along with the Abraham Accords, other broader initiatives connecting the Middle East to Asia and Europe were premised on gradual normalisation and cooperation. Business owners, governments and international lenders will be more hesitant to invest in projects perceived as vulnerable.
\nThe role of leadership is crucial in determining the contours of geopolitical outcomes. The ideational framework of Netanyahu, as an individual agent, influences the foreign policy behaviour of Israel. While structural factors matter, leaders socially construct the meaning of domestic and systemic conditions on the basis of their political ideology. Netanyahu has often emphasised themes of existential crisis, military power and national resilience. This kind of interpretative content is employed to mobilise domestic support, shape strategic choices and influence international perceptions. The strategic employment of ideas in politics should not be overstated. Narratives based on civilisational struggle, national identity and threats are far more persuasive than arguments based on material considerations. Netanyahu\u2019s political arguments are based on national survival and characterise strategic choices with ideological connotations that transform war into a contest for national order as well as the reclamation of territory. Hence, Netanyahu\u2019s ideational framework is imperative for seeking a contextual understanding of Greater Israel, the Israel-Iran conflict and the Abraham Accords.
\nA re-visioning of Netanyahu\u2019s war requires moving beyond the parameters of the military domain. The Israel-Iran conflict represents an intersection of resources, leadership choices, energy security, trade routes and ideational narratives. The Strait of Hormuz highlights the significance of regional stability, while the Abraham Accords demonstrate the economic and political opportunities, especially for Israel, that depend upon regional peace. There are several implications of Netanyahu\u2019s war: regional polarisation, risks to strategic trade routes, a trust deficit, alternative regional orders and energy politics. The geopolitics of the contemporary Israel-Iran conflict reveals crucial lessons: sustainable security requires the restoration of trust, frameworks to protect economic interdependence and the reformulation of a regional order in which cooperation becomes more rewarding than conflict.<\/p>\n
