\nThe National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) on Wednesday announced stricter safety measures on national highways and motorways, making the presence of fire extinguishers mandatory in all vehicles, particularly passenger and goods transport vehicles.
\nAccording to an NHMP spokesperson, the decision has been taken to enhance road safety and minimize the risk of fire-related incidents during traffic accidents.The spokesperson said special preventive measures had been introduced to protect lives and property from potential fire hazards on highways and motorways across the country. As part of the initiative, the Motorway Police has launched a nationwide fire safety awareness campaign, which will continue until June 24.
\nThe campaign was aimed to educate drivers and transport operators about the importance of carrying functional fire extinguishers and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
\nThe spokesperson emphasized that the availability of a working fire extinguisher in vehicles was essential for safeguarding passengers, drivers and cargo in emergency situations. Drivers have been advised to inspect the functionality and expiry date of their fire extinguishers before commencing travel.
\nThe NHMP clarified that expired or non-functional fire extinguishers would not be considered acceptable under the new safety requirements. The spokesperson warned that strict legal action would be taken against vehicles operating without fire extinguishers after June 24.
\nHe added that after the deadline, public service vehicles and goods transport vehicles lacking fire extinguishers would not be allowed to enter national highways and motorways.
