\nThe historic journey of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), from holy Makkah to Karbala remains one of the most significant events in Islamic history, symbolizing steadfast faith, moral courage, and unwavering resistance against oppression.
\nIslamic scholars and historians described the journey of Imam Hussain Ibne Hazrat Ali (RA) alongwith his devoted family and loyal companions as a defining chapter that reshaped the course of Muslim history and established timeless principles of justice, dignity, and sacrifice for generations to come.
\nIn 680 AD (61 AH), Imam Hussain (RA) refused to pledge allegiance to tyrant Yazid ibn Muawiyah, whose rule was widely viewed by Muslims as contrary to the principles of justice, equality and Islamic governance.
\nRather than compromise on truth and righteousness, Imam Hussain (RA) chose a path of principled resistance for supremacy of Islam despite knowing the immense challenges that lay ahead.
\nAccompanied by members of his family, including women and children, and a small group of loyal companions, Imam Hussain (RA) departed from the holy city of Makkah and embarked on a journey that would ultimately culminate in the plains of Karbala, present-day Iraq, where one of history\u2019s most poignant tragedies unfolded.
\nProfessor Dr. Abdul Ghafoor, former Dean of the Centre of Islamic Studies at the University of Peshawar, told APP on Wednesday that Imam Hussain (RA) shortened his Hajj pilgrimage on 8th Zul Hijjah, 61 AH (September 680 AD) and left Makkah to avoid bloodshed within the sacred premises of the Holy Kaaba amid reports of a possible assassination attempt.
\n\u201cThe sanctity of Makkah was of utmost importance to Imam Hussain (RA). He preferred to leave the city rather than allow violence to occur in one of Islam\u2019s holiest places,\u201d he said.
\nThe caravan traveled northward through the harsh Arabian desert, passing several historic stations including Tan\u2019eem, Safah, Zibala, Udhayb al-Hijanat, Sharaf, and Qasr Bani Muqatil.
\nAlong the route, Imam Hussain (RA) addressed local tribes and travelers, explaining his mission and calling upon Muslims to stand for justice and truth.
\nDuring the journey, distressing news reached Imam Hussain (RA) regarding the martyrdom of his cousin and envoy, Hazrat Muslim ibn Aqil (RA), who had been sent to Kufa to assess support among its residents.
\nThe news indicated that political circumstances in Kufa had changed dramatically under pressure from the tyrant Yazid administration.
\nDespite these developments, Imam Hussain (RA) remained committed to his mission, emphasizing that his objective was not political power but the revival of Islamic values, justice, equality and moral accountability.
\nAs the caravan approached Iraq, it was intercepted by a force led by Hurr ibne Yazid al-Riyahi. The group was prevented from proceeding toward Kufa and eventually forced towards the barren plains of Karbala, where they arrived on 2nd Muharram, 61 AH (October 2, 680 AD).
\nThe sad events that followed would become a defining symbol of sacrifice in Islamic history.
\nFor several days, Imam Hussain (RA), his family members, and devoted companions endured extreme hardship, including restrictions on access to water. Despite overwhelming odds, Imam Hussain (RA) and his followers remained steadfast in their commitment to justice and faith.
\nOn the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, Imam Hussain (RA), along with many members of his family and loyal companions, embraced martyrdom after displaying extraordinary courage, patience, and devotion.
\nScholars reiterated that the Battle of Karbala was not merely a military confrontation but a moral struggle between justice and oppression, principles and expediency, truth and falsehood.
\nFollowing the tragedy, the surviving members of the Prophet\u2019s (PBUH) household, including Hazrat Zainab (RA) and Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA), were taken captive and marched from Karbala to Kufa and later to Damascus.
\nDespite enduring immense sufferings and witnessing the loss of loved ones, Hazrat Zainab (RA) emerged as one of the most powerful voices of resistance in Islamic history.
\nThrough her eloquent sermons in the tyrant Yazid courts of Kufa and Damascus, she courageously exposed the atrocities committed against the family of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and ensured that the message of Karbala reached the broader Muslim community.
\nReligious scholars regard Hazrat Zainab (RA)\u2019s role as instrumental in preserving the legacy of Karbala and transforming a tragic event into an enduring movement for justice and human dignity.
\nProfessor Dr. Farooq Hussain, Chairman of the Department of Islamic Theology at Islamia College Peshawar, said that the message of Karbala continues to inspire millions across the world.
\n\u201cImam Hussain (RA) demonstrated that moral principles cannot be compromised for worldly gain. His stand against cruelty and injustice remains a timeless example of courage and integrity,\u201d he said.
\nHe observed that Karbala teaches the importance of patience, steadfastness, loyalty, sacrifice, and resistance against tyranny.
\n\u201cThe tragedy reminds humanity that success is not measured by material power but by commitment to truth and righteousness.
\nImam Hussain (RA) chose honour over submission and left behind a legacy that continues to illuminate hearts and minds centuries later,\u201d he added.
\nScholars further said that the sacrifices of Karbala continue to resonate deeply across the Muslim world, particularly during the sacred month of Muharram, when millions commemorate the events and reflect upon their moral and spiritual lessons.
\nThey emphasized that the universal message of Imam Hussain (RA)\u2019s sacrifice transcends geographical boundaries, sectarian differences, and historical eras, inspiring people of all backgrounds to stand for justice and equality, defend human dignity, and resist oppression.
\nExperts said Karbala remains a timeless symbol of faith, courage, and sacrifice.
