{"id":553200,"date":"2026-06-28T08:19:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T03:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/?p=553200"},"modified":"2026-06-28T08:19:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T03:19:16","slug":"glacier-melting-alert-issued-for-gilgit-baltistan-kp-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadpakistan.com.pk\/news\/glacier-melting-alert-issued-for-gilgit-baltistan-kp-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"Glacier melting alert issued for Gilgit-Baltistan, KP areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> ISLAMABAD<br \/>\nThe National Disaster Management Authority has issued an alert over rapid glacier melting and related hazards in mountainous and upper areas of the country.<br \/>\nAccording to the NDMA, continuous intense heat and expected rains may increase water flow in rivers and streams from June 27 to July 3, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides and mudslides.<br \/>\nAn NDMA spokesperson said glacial ice melt is likely to increase the flow of water in rivers and streams during the coming days. The authority warned that rapid glacier melting could cause sudden rises in water levels in rivers, streams and channels originating from glaciers.<br \/>\nThe NDMA said increasing pressure on glacial lakes may also trigger sudden water discharge, creating risks of flash floods, landslides and mudslides.<br \/>\nMost areas of Gilgit-Baltistan have been declared sensitive due to the potential glacier-related hazards. The NDMA advised special caution in Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ganche, Kharmang, Astore and Diamer. Local administrations in areas located near glaciers in Gilgit-Baltistan have been instructed to remain alert and monitor the situation closely.<br \/>\nSpecial caution has also been advised in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Swat and adjoining areas.
