A new chapter in Islamabad’s contemporary art scene began on Sunday with the launch of FMR Art Space, which opened its doors with its inaugural group exhibition, “The First Layer: The Beginning of Becoming,” showcasing works by emerging and mid-career Pakistani artists.
\nCurated by acclaimed miniature artist and Farrah Mehmood Rana, the exhibition features around 50 artworks by 20 artists, including graduates of the National College of Arts (NCA), Beaconhouse National University (BNU) and COMSATS University Islamabad. The showcase aims to highlight the evolving landscape of contemporary Pakistani art while providing a platform for young and emerging talent.
\nThe participating artists include Amna Hashmi, Areej Zubair, Dagmer Rauwald, Farida Fatima, Hafsa Iram, Khan Labeeb, Muhammad Junaid, Samreen Asghar, Samreen Rehman, Sidra Ashraf, Shameen Amjad, Dr. Tabassum Shaheen, Ufaq Tabassum, Widyan Tarar, Zarin Gul and Zainab Mudassir, among others.<\/p>\n
Speaking about the exhibition, Farrah Mehmood Rana said The First Layer represents “the beginning of becoming,” where artistic ideas, creative processes and practices converge to shape new possibilities.<\/p>\n
“This exhibition is not simply an opening; it is an invitation into dialogue, exploration and the deliberate work of artists finding their footing and their voices,” she said.<\/p>\n
The curator said the inclusion of recently graduated COMSATS artists reflects her commitment to supporting emerging creative practices. Alongside her distinguished academic career, Rana has remained actively engaged in promoting art and culture, leading to the establishment of FMR Art Space as a dedicated venue for exhibitions and other cultural activities.
\nThe opening ceremony was attended by Jan Gerald Krausser and Mher Princess as chief guests. Both are noted art collectors, and their participation highlighted growing international interest in Pakistan’s contemporary art scene.
\nThe organisers said the presence of German representatives also reflects prospects for enhanced cultural collaboration between Pakistan and Germany through artist exchanges, dialogue and joint creative initiatives.<\/p>\n
