Jamaat-e-Islami has taken its protest to the streets, setting up a sit-in outside the Governor House in Karachi. Monday marked the second day of the demonstration. Karachi chief Munim Zafar Khan says the anger is real. People are tired of high petrol prices, heavy petroleum levies and expensive electricity bills. This frustration did not appear overnight. It has built up over months as household expenses have continued to rise.
\nMr Zafar has demanded an immediate reduction in petrol prices and described the levies imposed on fuel as unfair. There is merit in the broader concern. Ordinary families cannot indefinitely absorb higher costs, particularly when every increase in fuel prices travels through the economy. Transport becomes more expensive, food prices rise and already stretched household budgets come under even greater pressure.
\nThe party has also demanded a forensic audit of Independent Power Producers. The demand reflects longstanding public frustration over the structure of power-sector agreements and the burden they ultimately place on consumers. An audit, if conducted transparently and professionally, could help establish where inefficiencies lie and whether the public is receiving value for the enormous sums being paid through the electricity system. Citizens deserve a clearer explanation of why their bills remain so high despite repeated promises of reform.
\nThe protest is not limited to Karachi. Jamaat-e-Islami has launched sit-ins in all four provinces, underscoring that the problem is hardly local. Families across the country are confronting the same pressures. The planned participation of a large number of women in the Karachi sit-in also reflects the extent to which rising utility and fuel costs have become household concerns rather than merely political talking points.
\nThe government cannot afford to dismiss this pressure. Nor can it continue relying on the same temporary remedies while structural problems remain untouched. Petroleum levies need to be reviewed in the broader context of an excessively narrow tax base. Power-sector agreements and capacity payments require greater transparency. More importantly, the government must explain how it intends to provide relief without simply shifting the burden from one category of consumers to another.
\nInflation may have many causes, and the government faces genuine fiscal constraints. But those constraints cannot become a permanent excuse for asking ordinary citizens to carry an ever-greater share of the burden. Reform must therefore extend beyond price adjustments. It must address taxation, energy-sector inefficiencies and the continuing tendency to extract revenue through indirect charges that affect almost everyone.
