Every year, families across Pakistan go through the same emotional routine. Parents make sacrifices, save every rupee, and borrow money to provide their children with a good education. When a kid finally finishes school or university, everyone feels a giant wave of relief. But then reality hits. They step out into the job market and realize something painful: the degree they spend years earning doesn\u2019t have the demand they expect.
\nThink about it: when a student picks a major subject today, does anyone know if that skill will still be in demand four or five years later when they graduate? Right now, kids choose subjects based on what their parents advise, what their friends are studying, or just what sounds prestigious.
\nThere are zero data guiding them, and that is the massive blind spot in our system. Pakistan is one of the youngest countries in the world-around 64- 67% of our population is under the age of thirty. Every year many young people enter the job market. At the same time, factory owners, business leaders, and tech startups often complain that they cannot find workers right skill.
\nHow is that possible? Because our education system is running on autopilot. Universities and technical boards keep teaching the exact same things they did decade ago.
\nThey don\u2019t check whether the economy needs this skill anymore. Meanwhile, technology, AI, e-commerce and green energy are completely changing how the world works. If we ignore these shifts, our youth will be left behind.
\nPakistan needs something practical to understand how the job market is changing. We need a National Future Jobs Observatory, a simple system that can track where the economy is heading, what jobs are growing, and what skills young people will need in the year ahead.
\nIt doesn\u2019t need to be another office with complicated procedure; its role should be simple and practical: to identify where the economy is heading, track which jobs and industries are growing, identify the skills that are becoming outdated, and find out what new skills will be needed in the future.
\nThis information should then be shared openly with students, schools, universities, businesses, and policymakers. In this way, young people can make better career choices. Educational institutions can adjust their programmes, and policymakers can plan for the changing needs of the economy. Instead of guessing, this observatory would regularly collect data from real sources \u2013 labour force surveys, feedback from business, hiring trends on job portal, and global market changes. And most importantly, it would put that information out in plain, simple language for ordinary people.
\nPakistan is a massive and diverse country. A single report sitting in Islamabad isn\u2019t going to help a student in a small town. Hats why this data needs to be updated every year and broken down into three clear levels. At the national level, it should show the country\u2019s overall economic direction. Including technology, green and emerging industries.
\nAt the provincial level, it should focus on local strength-from farming and manufacturing in Punjab to trade in Sindh, tourism and minerals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and resources and trade routes in Baluchistan. But the district level matters most. A student in Sialkot needs to know about opportunities in sports goods and surgical manufacturing.
\nA young person in Faisalabad needs to see where textile automation and modern farming are heading. In Karachi, the focus may be logistics, finance and industry, while Islamabad and Rawalpindi may offer growing opportunities in IT and free lancing.
\nIf the portal is updated every year and linked to a simple mobile application, people could use this information to choose skills based on where jobs are heading -not where they were years ago. The information should be free, easy to understand and accessible even to students using basic
\nLet\u2019s be honest, setting these portal standards would not be easy. We must deal with some tough hurdles: First, a huge chunk of Pakistan\u2019s economy is informal (off-the-book), making it hard to track numbers accurately. Secondly, universities and public training boards hate change and are very slow to update their courses.
\nThirdly, political instability and funding shortages can easily kill good projects, and many rural youths might struggle to access or understand digital data portals. We don\u2019t need to build a huge bureaucracy from scratch. Pakistan already has many institutions collecting useful information.
\nWhat we need to connect this information and make it useful for students, employers and policy makers. Combine the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, NAVTTC, and provincial labour department into one connected system instead of creating a massive new bureaucracy.
\nThe chambers of commerce and local business owners should be part of data collection. They want skilled workers, so they will gladly share what skill they are struggling to find. Everyone talks about AI and coding, but Pakistan will still need skilled worker in healthcare, agriculture, construction, transport and manufacturing. The Observatory should not simply follow global trends it should also understand Pakistan\u2019s real economics needs and identify where skilled workers are required.
\nThe website or mobile app should be simple for a student in a village to use on a basic smartphone. Access to career information should not depend on whether someone lives in Islamabad, Karachi, or a remote district. Our young population is our greatest strength but hope and enthusiasm alone will not build career. Education needs to match reality.
\nBy creatin a National Future Jobs Observatory that provides clear. Yearly and district-level information, we can finally bridge the gap between education and employment. instead of simply asking young people \u201cWhat do you want to study\u201d we should give them the tools to answer a much more important question \u201cwhat skills will my country and the world need by the time I graduate\u201d
