The Taliban\u2019s much-touted poppy ban is a masterclass in market manipulation, not counter-narcotics. Cultivation fell 95% in 2023, a statistic the regime flaunts for international legitimacy. Yet the trafficking infrastructure remains untouched. \nAnd that change was immensely profitable. With supply artificially constricted, dry opium prices jumped from USD 75\/kg in 2022 to USD 750\/kg in 2024. The value of the existing stockpile is now estimated at USD 4.6 to 5.9 billion, equal to 23-29% of Afghanistan\u2019s entire 2023 GDP. This is not a shadow economy; rather, it is a revenue stream operating through the state. Taliban commanders are market players, not enforcers. In Helmand, Afghanistan\u2019s largest opium market deals with approximately 70% of opium trade and is linked to local Taliban commanders and senior officials, who bought and stockpiled opium to profit from rising prices. They are not burning fields; they are hoarding product. Stock ownership, financial flows and protection networks demand independent international investigation, not joint teams led by the beneficiaries. When opium became politically costly, the regime simply shifted production to synthetic drugs, which are easier to produce, hide and transport. An estimated 5,000 meth labs operate across Afghanistan today, concentrated in Helmand, Farah, Herat and Nimroz, running on precursors sourced from India and South Korea. Taliban commanders and connected actors permit ephedra production and smuggling while extracting revenue from those involved. Afghanistan, once the world\u2019s opium capital, is now its meth lab. Afghan-origin drugs continue to reach international markets via Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and the Pakistan-Iran-Afghanistan tri-border area leading to the Makran Coast, onward to T\u00fcrkiye and beyond. Beyond the local scope, this is a transnational supply chain. Regular international interdictions and violent internal clashes expose the Taliban\u2019s counter-narcotics claims as a smokescreen for a profitable state business model. A joint US-Pakistan operation recently seized 463 kilograms of Afghan-origin crystal meth bound for Sri Lanka, underscoring Afghanistan\u2019s thriving synthetic-drug export trade. More damningly, drug profits are fueling armed infighting within the regime itself. On October 23, 2026, a deadly clash erupted when a former Taliban police chief led a raid against border forces to free narcotics vehicles belonging to a well-connected factory operator, leaving nine Taliban dead. This internal bloodshed exposes powerful protection networks shielding elite traffickers. The regime continues to tax banned crops, manipulate opium prices via stockpiles, operate thousands of methamphetamine labs, and permit commanders to fight over shipments. Consequently, foreign policy offers of regional cooperation are merely attempts to shift blame. The international community cannot treat Afghanistan as a partner in counter-narcotics when the trade is institutionalised. Addressing this crisis requires recognising the Taliban regime not as a victim of a development failure, but as the target, necessitating direct investigations into their financial flows, lab networks, and massive stockpiles.<\/p>\n
