United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) consultant Ahsan Hameed Durrani while speaking at conference said that eco-tourism, textile and renewable energy sectors of the country have a lot of potential to create green jobs without creating challenges for the environment.
He made these remarks while addressing a conference jointly organized by the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) and UNDP-Pakistan at Peshawar on Tuesday.
A stakeholder conference was organized for the youth and women of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the green jobs market in eco-tourism, textile industry and renewable energy sectors.
A large number of businessmen, women and youth participated in the conference.
UNDP Consultant Ahsan Hameed Durrani gave a detailed presentation on these three areas.
“Green job does not mean that we are neglecting the traditional fields but the purpose of green job is to create new opportunities for the youth in these three fields and especially the environmental impact,” UNDP consultant said.
He reviewed the big difference in the ratio of men and women in different fields, adding that without women societies could not move forward in any field of life.
Speakers of the conference demanded that the government should subsidize the solar energy sector and make it accessible to people as early as possible.
The participants suggested necessary training for youth in the field of tourism and keeping the tourist spots free from pollution and plastics.
On the occasion, the women said that there was an urgent need to harness the potential of women in the province, especially in the field of handicrafts to encourage women and give them modern technological skills to access the direct market.
Women participants of the conference said that creating a better environment for people working in textile industries and ensuring the participation of women in these sectors was an important step that needed to be taken for prosperity and progress.
Speaking on the occasion, FPCCI Coordinator Sartaj Ahmad Khan said that there were immense opportunities for the development of the tourism sector in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He suggested that women and youth should be taught modern digital skills so that they could access the market directly, otherwise the middlemen would continue to buy their products at cheap prices and sell them at high prices, which would benefit the middlemen.
He also said that the FPCCI was ready to work with the UNDP at every stage.
