Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman on Wednesday warned global community of growing chances of international recession amidst climate change and continuous confrontation.
Taking it to Twitter, the minister said Pakistan was already facing immense food shortage and supply chain issues. “The World Trade Organization (WTO) has warned the world about a global recession. Climate change and ongoing global conflicts are causing the recession. Pakistan already faces severe food and access problems due to rains and floods,” the minister tweeted on Wednesday.
“Our infrastructure including agriculture and transportation systems have been damaged due to floods. Crops on 46 lakh acres of land have been damaged. According to estimates so far, crops and commodities worth Rs 481 billion have been destroyed. More than 13 thousand kilometers of roads and 410 bridges have been damaged,” she said, while talking about estimated losses caused by floods.
“Many problems can arise due to the [problems in] transportation system and food crisis. The effects of climate change have gripped the entire world. The recession will have a negative impact on the Global South. All countries are moving towards a new crisis due to the effects of climate change,” she said in a subsequent tweet.
