Pakistan’s economy has long relied on agriculture as a significant sector, providing livelihoods for a large portion of the population and contributing to the country’s GDP. Recognizing the immense potential of the agro-based economy, the Pakistan government has shown a renewed commitment to prioritize and invest in this sector. This focused approach not only promises sustainable economic development but also holds the key to social change, poverty alleviation and the integration of marginalized groups, young people and the unemployed.
Pakistan possesses rich agricultural resources, including fertile soil, favorable climate conditions and abundant water resources. Despite these advantages, the sector has faced numerous challenges, such as low productivity, outdated farming techniques, inadequate infrastructure and limited access to credit and markets. However, the government’s commitment to addressing these issues and promoting a modern, technology-driven agricultural sector marks a significant turning point.
Participating in the general discussion on the budget for the year 20023-24, Minister for National Food Security, Tariq Bashir Cheema has recognized the crucial role of the agricultural sector in the country’s economy and said that its importance cannot be denied. A systematic approach should be streamlined in the annual development schemes to implement the idea of agro-based economy which would not only provide rural populations with an opportunity for employment but will help them to generate their income and thereby improve the economic condition of people.
Agriculture sector engages 45 percent of the labour force and contributes 21.4 percent to GDP. Though agriculture in Pakistan is the major sector of the economy, yet it has not been developed on proper lines.
A strong agriculture economy plays a pivotal role in poverty reduction and social change. By investing in agro-based industries, the government can generate employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas where poverty rates are typically high. With enhanced productivity and better market linkages, small-scale farmers and laborers can improve their income levels, leading to an improved standard of living. Moreover, increased agricultural productivity can create a multiplier effect on other sectors, stimulating rural development and boosting overall economic growth. Pakistan is home to a significant population of marginalized groups, including women, youth and the unemployed. Empowering these segments through agriculture can create avenues for their meaningful participation in the economy.
In an era of climate change and environmental degradation, sustainable agriculture practices are crucial for long-term economic development. The government’s commitment to promoting modern techniques, such as precision farming, organic agriculture, and efficient water management, not only enhances productivity but also ensures the preservation of natural resources. By adopting eco-friendly practices, Pakistan can mitigate the negative impacts of agriculture on the environment, protect biodiversity, and secure the livelihoods of future generations.
Pakistan’s agricultural sector has untapped export potential, which can significantly contribute to foreign exchange earnings and reduce trade deficits. The government’s commitment to improving the quality and standardization of agricultural products, establishing robust market linkages, and promoting value addition will enable the country to compete in the global market.
With continued commitment and effective implementation of policies and reforms, the country can unlock the true potential of its agricultural resources. A strong agriculture economy not only guarantees a prosperous future for Pakistan but also ensures the integration of poverty groups, young people, and the unemployed, leading to a more inclusive and equitable society.
