Govt decides crackdown on power theft, reforms

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has principally decided to launch a crackdown on power pilferage across the country, however, energy lawyers urged the policy makers to address much awaited structural changes in Discos which didn’t require financial arrangements but a sense of ownership. Talking to TLTP, energy law expert said policy makers are required to consider that only crackdown in the row may not be effective until structural changes in Discos through taking stringent measures against staffers in order to eliminate factors providing opportunities for corruption and malpractices. It has also been revealed that there is a chain of corruption in the Discos whereas non fulfilment against the sanctioned posts of the lower staff in the Discos also creating more opportunities for corruption in the vicinities. Minister for Energy Muhammad Ali said on Thursday while speaking to Sindh Governor Muhammad Kamran Tessori who called on him in Islamabad, said the government would bring about reforms in the energy sector. The minister said he would visit Karachi this week to meet businessmen to resolve issues of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. On the occasion, the Sindh governor presented recommendations of the KCCI to the federal minister. TLTP
