In a remarkable and rare achievement, the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) has successfully completed seven hydropower projects, boasting a collective capacity of 162 megawatts in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). This monumental endeavor has not only illuminated homes and industries, but also brought economic prosperity to the region, generating a substantial revenue of Rs47 billion from electricity generation projects operating under the auspices of PEDO.
A briefing to the caretaker Minister for Energy in KP, Engineer Ahmed Jan Khan, shed light on the ongoing and completed energy projects within the province. With abundant natural water resources at its disposal, KP has rightly placed the utilization of these resources for the generation of affordable electricity at the forefront of its priorities.
The current government’s commitment to practical steps for provincial development and efficient public service delivery is commendable. PEDO, with its rapid strides in the energy sector, is poised to be a cornerstone of future economic stability for KP, offering resilience against the persistent energy crisis. The organization’s focus on accelerating the production of low-cost hydropower electricity is a welcome move.
According to a report published on these pages, the CEO of PEDO, Engineer Naeem Khan, has revealed that the income generated from electricity projects has already surpassed Rs 47 billion, with ongoing efforts to further bolster this figure, ultimately stabilizing the economy of both the province and the country at large.
These accomplishments are underscored by the successful completion of major hydropower projects, including the 84MW Gorkan Matiltan Hydropower Project, the 69MW Lavi, the 40MW Koto, the 11MW Crora, and the 10MW Jabori Hydropower Project, together generating billions of rupees annually. Additionally, five more projects nearing completion will add 216 MW to the energy grid.
PEDO is not only focusing on large-scale projects but also on sustainable initiatives. The progress on the 13.5 MW Chaparichar Khel and 6.9 MW Mujahdin Hydropower Projects demonstrates a commitment to diversified energy sources.
Furthermore, the organization has embarked on ambitious projects with the support of international financial institutions, such as the 300 MW Balakot Hydropower Project with the Asian Development Bank and the 88 MW Gabral Kalam and 157 MW Madin Hydropower Projects with the World Bank’s backing.
Engineer Naeem Khan highlights the organization’s solarization efforts, transforming government buildings, schools, basic health units (BHUs), mosques, and even remote villages into solar-powered entities. These endeavors not only contribute to energy sustainability but also empower local communities. A beacon of hope in areas deprived of electricity, PEDO has successfully completed 316 mini micro hydropower projects, with an additional 291 projects in the pipeline for phase two.
This ambitious initiative is a testament to the organization’s dedication to electrify even the remotest regions.
Looking forward, PEDO’s business and financial plan to generate 2200 megawatts of affordable electricity in the next eight years is not only promising but transformative. This electricity will be channeled to the industrial sector through innovative models, further bolstering the provincial economy and reducing unemployment.
Moreover, the collaboration with the private sector on 12-megawatt projects signals a positive trajectory for the province’s economic development.
The accomplishments of PEDO in hydropower development are nothing short of exceptional. Its performance marks a promising step towards sustaining and expanding KP’s energy development initiatives. As the province continues to thrive through the harnessing of its natural resources, it serves as an inspiring example for the nation.
