THATTA
Haji Khan Jamali, the Chief Engineer of the Irrigation Department, has announced a promising development in the battle against water scarcity along Thatta’s coastal belt. The Sindh government initiated a vital project two years ago, which is set to complete 65 kilometers of lining work by the coming December, with a budget of 4 billion rupees.
Addressing the media at the project site on Tuesday, Jamali emphasized that this initiative would bring a lasting solution to the chronic water shortage in the coastal areas. The enhanced infrastructure will cater to both irrigation needs and drinking water requirements.
In the notsodistant past, the region grappled with a severe water crisis, leaving local residents without access to clean drinking water and leaving agriculture and livestock parched. This dire situation forced thousands to abandon their homes in search of water in other cities.
Notably, the former MPA Haji Ali Hassan Zardari, in collaboration with the World Bank and the Sindh government, secured a substantial 4billionrupee funding for the Udero Branch project, which commenced two years ago.
The construction of this branch has not only delivered a reliable source of clean water for both drinking and agricultural purposes but has also put an end to the wastage of this precious resource. As a result, those who had previously migrated are returning, and the region stands to reap the significant benefits of this essential water infrastructure.
