Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agriculture Minister, Major (retd) Sajjad Barakwal, emphasized the need for agricultural research to focus on developing cost-effective solutions that would help landowners maximize their production. He called for minimizing pesticide use in agriculture for productive crops yield.
He highlighted the importance of cleanliness and other maintenance issues at research institutes, stressing that agricultural research should offer tangible benefits to farmers.
These remarks were made during his visit to the Agricultural Research Institute Tarnab and the Directorate of Agriculture Extension in Peshawar.
Alongside him were key officials, including Director General Agricultural Research Dr. Abdul Rauf, Director General Agriculture Extension Abdul Qayyum, Director General Crop Reporting Syed Altaf Shah, and other relevant officers.
The minister also spoke about the importance of minimizing pesticide use and improving quality in agricultural practices.
During the visit, he closely examined the orange project and directed that high-quality orange seedlings be provided to landowners to help them establish orange orchards. He also urged that certified olive seedlings of superior varieties be distributed to farmers and emphasized the importance of certified olive cultivation in ongoing provincial olive projects.
In addition, Barakwal called for the facilitation of the liquid testing lab’s services to enable easier water and soil analysis for landowners, with a goal of reducing fertilizer use.
He also inspected various sections of the research institute and issued necessary instructions to ensure these initiatives are effectively implemented.
