Over 15,000 medicine shops inspected by Drug Control Directorate in 2024

Directorate General Drug Controls Pharmacy on Wednesday released its annual report for 2024, which claimed that a total of 15159 inspections of medicines shops distributors & wholesale drug outlets were conducted throughout the year, resulting in 2.134 (14.1%) seizures (Form-6 and Form-4) and the collection of 9,044 suspected samples for the purpose of test analysis to check the quality.
Out of these 474 (4.9%) sample were declared substandard, 358 (2-4) were unregistered, 26 (0.4%) were ad, 139 (0.9%) were misbranded, and 53 (0.21%) were found in contravention of Clause H. Additionally, 219 (1.4%) samples were declared spurious. The operations led to the sealing of 250 (1.6%) medicine shops and the filing of 108 (0.754) FIR
The cases referred to the Provincial Quality Control Bound (PQCB) under 19 (6) of The Drug Act 1976 amounted to 2,757 (18.2%), with 620 (22.5%) launched in the Drug Court. The court resolved 183 (61.83%) cases, imposing fines totaling PKR 9,552,000. The month-wise data reveals fluctuations in activity, with August recording the highest Inspections (1508) and sample collections (0-1,259), whereas October marked the peak in prosecutions launched (-76).
Similarly, the highest fines were imposed in the month of November amounting to Rs2,433,000.
Overall, the report reflects robust efforts to ensure quality control and regulatory compliance in the pharmaceutical industry.
