A three-year agreement has been signed between University of Peshawar (UoP) and the Directorate of Social Welfare, Special Education, and Women’s Empowerment.
According to a statement, the signing ceremony was attended by provincial minister for social welfare Syed Qasim Ali Shah, the Vice-Chancellor of UoP Prof Muhammad Naeem Qazi and other officials.
Provincial Minister for Social Welfare, Syed Qasim Ali Shah, underscored the importance of implementing the agreement, which includes training workshops and employment opportunities for social work students.
He expressed optimism that the agreement would support the provincial government’s major initiatives—Drug-Free Peshawar and Beggar-Free Peshawar—by utilizing effective prevention strategies and psychological outreach in collaboration with UoP.
Rafiq Mohmand, Director of Social Welfare, also highlighted the launch of the province’s first Braille Academy for visually impaired individuals, which will be a significant component of the agreement.
He added that both Drug-Free Peshawar and Beggar-Free Peshawar will play a key role in providing care for disabled individuals as part of the government’s broader social welfare agenda.
Speaking on this occasion, Prof Muhammad Naeem Qazi praised the initiative and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with the Social Welfare Directorate.
On behalf of the Social Work Department of the University of Peshawar, Dr Shakeel Ahmad presented the social policy and objectives of introducing the Habilitation curriculum.
He noted that the partnership would bridge the gap between theoretical and practical research, with the potential for publishing articles in international journals.
