Journalists mark World Press Freedom Day in Landi Kotal

World Press Freedom Day observed in the country including Khyber to inform the community that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are basic human rights.
In this connection a simple gathering was organized in the District Press Club, Landi Kotal on Saturday that was attended by a number of local media persons.
Speaking on the occasion President of the press club Aman Ali Shinwari said that the main purpose of the Day was to uphold the international right of press of freedom and to promote responsible journalism.
He maintained that the journalist community across the world risked their lives to bring positive change in the society by unearthing truth.
Paying tribute to the martyred journalists across the world including more than seventeen martyred tribal media persons; he added that they lay down their lives in the line of duty.
It is need of time to initiate measures for the safety and security of the journalist enabling them to freely report on important issues without fear, Shinwari remarked.
He went on that the tribal journalists executed their duties with efficiency contrary to the unfavorable prevailed situation.
He demanded enquiry and arrest of killers of the deceased local journalist, Khalil Jibran, murdered by unknown armed persons last year and establishing a media colony for the Khyber media persons.
At the end prayers were offered for the departed souls of late journalists.
It is to be stated here that 3 May; the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day after it was proclaimed World Press Freedom Day by the United National General Assembly in December 1993.
