The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, led by Saudi Arabia, discussed important issues related to South Asia, the Middle East and global peace, calling the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan an important step towards establishing peace in the region. The GCC said in a statement issued after the meeting on Monday that the Council “appreciated the efforts of Pakistan and India to demonstrate wisdom and restraint and expressed the hope that this ceasefire agreement will be helpful in bringing stability to the subcontinent.”
The Council praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts, which resulted in a reduction in tensions between the two.
The statement said that for peace in the region, both countries must adopt diplomatic channels, international law, UN resolutions and the principles of good neighborliness.
The Council stressed the importance of restoring security and stability in the Indian subcontinent, resolving disputes through diplomatic means, adhering to the principles of good neighbourliness, international law and UN resolutions, and refraining from the use or threat of force.
The declaration also emphasized the role of the United Nations in resolving the dispute between India and Pakistan and strengthening the United Nations Military Observer Force in Kashmir (UNMOGIP).
