The International Institute for Regional and International Studies (IIRIS) successfully organized a webinar titled “Complex Geo-Political & Geo-Strategic Environment in South Asia” on August 29, 2025.
The event brought together distinguished scholars and practitioners to deliberate on South Asia’s evolving security environment, regional tensions, and prospects for peacebuilding in an increasingly complex global context.
The session was moderated by Mr. Shafqat Rasool, President of IIRIS, who set the stage by underlining the critical importance of informed dialogue and academic engagement in navigating South Asia’s geopolitical landscape.The panel featured leading voices in the field of international relations and strategic studies. Dr. Tauqeer Hussain Sargana, Assistant Professor, delivered an in-depth talk on “Dynamics of Nuclear Threshold between Pakistan and India”, offering valuable insights into the challenges of deterrence stability and nuclear escalation risks.
Dr. Salma Malik, Associate Professor, explored “From Pahalgam to Ceasefire: The Anatomy of a Crisis in South Asia”, highlighting the enduring patterns of conflict and crisis management between the two nuclear neighbors. Adding a forward-looking perspective, Dr. Shabana Fayyaz, Professor, discussed “Social Media and Peacebuilding in South Asia”, emphasizing the role of digital platforms in shaping narratives and fostering confidence-building measures across societies.
The webinar provided a platform for constructive exchange, allowing participants to engage with critical questions on nuclear doctrines, crisis escalation, and emerging tools for peacebuilding. Discussions underscored the urgent need for regional cooperation, innovative conflict resolution strategies, and sustained dialogue to mitigate tensions and ensure long-term stability. With active participation from scholars, researchers, and policy enthusiasts across Pakistan, the event successfully advanced IIRIS’s mission of fostering academic debate and informed policymaking on issues of strategic significance.
