The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has taken strong notice of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi’s alleged threatening remarks made during a public rally in Havelian on Wednesday.
According to the ECP, the chief minister’s statement, in which he reportedly issued threats to the district administration, police, and election staff, while also inciting the crowd, has created serious concerns ahead of the NA-18 Haripur by-election.
The Commission stated that such “irresponsible behaviour” from the provincial chief executive has not only jeopardized the prospects of a peaceful electoral process but also put the lives of government officials on election duty, as well as voters, at risk.
Following the development, the ECP directed the Provincial Election Commissioner KP to immediately convene a meeting with the Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Police (IGP) and submit a detailed report after implementing all necessary security measures.
The issue was formally placed before the Chief Secretary during a meeting held at the office of the Provincial Election Commissioner earlier today.
The ECP emphasized that the safety of polling staff will be ensured at all costs and warned that no individual will be permitted to influence the election process.
The Commission further stated that strict legal action will be taken against any elements found attempting to disrupt or manipulate the by-election.
