The Central Deputy Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Khan, has said that the local government system should be restored because the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) first abolished the governments while they were still alive and robbed the people of their autonomy by closing the funds of local government institutions.
Every time the local government institutions were established, local government representatives spent their time protesting and beating for their rights.
Addressing a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club (PPC) along with former Senior Provincial Minister for Local Government and Ameer of JI North Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inayatullah Khan, Abdul Wasi and Abdul Razzaq, he said that it is with great regret that when the PTI was defeated in the local government elections in KP, in its second as well, they tried to weaken the local government system from weak to weak and kept their funds closed and did not provide them with funds.
He said that the provincial government should not repeat the experiences of the past and if these experiences are repeated, it will be a great injustice to the people because in the future the people need a better local government system.
If the local government system is not strong, governance will not be able to function properly, he added and said that we demand from the government that local government elections should be held soon, that they should be given powers, that they should be given funds so that they can serve the people.
He said that there are talks of changing the system, so we request our government to first present any changes they want to bring in the system to the people.
He said that in the last four years, local government institutions were neither given powers nor funds.
Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Khan said that on December 21, protest demonstrations will be held throughout the province on the orders of Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman.
Finally, he demanded that local government elections should be held as soon as possible and funds should be released to local government institutions and they should be empowered.
