Peshawar reports mounting suicide incidents among youth

PESHAWAR: Suicide incidents among young people in Peshawar have increased at an alarming rate, with poverty, unemployment and growing mental stress emerging as major contributing factors. Recent cases have raised serious concerns for society and authorities alike. According to details reported on Monday, multiple suicide-related incidents have been reported in the areas of Budh Bair, Phandu and Mashokhel. In Karra Khel area of Mashokhel, a 19-year-old youth, Asad son of Gul Shad, allegedly shot himself in his grandfather’s hujra following a heated argument with his parents. He died on the spot. Police shifted the body for post-mortem examination and have launched an investigation from various angles. In another incident within the limits of Phandu police station, 18-year-old youth, Ehtesham Amin son of Nawaz-ul-Amin, allegedly fired at himself inside a room in Ittefaq Colony, Ejaz Abad. He sustained critical injuries and was shifted to hospital, where his condition is reported to be serious. Police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 and started an investigation. Police officials stated that similar incidents have previously been reported in different police station jurisdictions of Peshawar, highlighting the severity of economic pressure and mental health issues among the youth. Mental health experts warn that if immediate attention is not given to the psychological well-being of young people, the situation could worsen further. APP
