ATC announces verdict in May 9 riots case; journalists Wajahat Saeed, Sabir Shakir, Moeed Pirzada among those convicted
ISLAMABAD
Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) Islamabad has awarded two time life imprisonment to Adil Raja and other accused persons in the case of digital terrorism against the state institutions.
The case pertaining to digital terrorism against the state institutions on May 9 came up for hearing in ATC Islamabad Friday.
ATC judge Tahir Abbas Sipra announced the reserved judgment on completion of trial some time before .
The court awarded life sentence to Adil Raja, Haider Mehdi and Wajahat Hussain two time life imprisonment each.
Sabir Shakir and Moeed Pirzada were also awarded life imprisonment two times each .
. In addition, the accused were sentenced to a cumulative 35 years of imprisonment under other charges and fined a total of Rs1.5 million.
Prosecution presented 24 witnesses in the court during the hearing of the case.
The court completed the trial in the absence of the accused on the request of prosecution.
Raja Navid Hussain Kayani appeared in the court on behalf of the prosecution.
In the case registered at Abpara Police Station, the court sentenced Sabir Shakir, Moeed Pirzada, and Syed Akbar Hussain to life imprisonment. In the case registered at Ramna Police Station, sentences were awarded to Shaheen Sehbai, Haider Mehdi, and Wajahat Saeed.
Gulfam Ashraf Goraya advocate appeared in the court on behalf of the accused persons. The court had appointed Gulfam Goraya as counsel of the accused persons.
According to Terrorism laws, the accused can be tried in their absence.
