Saidu hospital in Swat to be upgraded to MTI status, says health minister

Provincial minister for health Khaliq-ur-Rehman on Wednesday chaired a special meeting to assess and improve the healthcare services in the Swat district, said a handout.
The meeting focused on the current status of primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare facilities in the region, with a special emphasis on enhancing the services available to local residents.
Along with Provincial Minister for Housing Dr. Amjad Ali, members of the Provincial Assembly Fazal-e-Hakeem Khan and Mian Sharafat Ali, Health Secretary Shahidullah Khan, Sector Health Officers, and Medical Superintendents, the meeting was attended by key stakeholders in the province’s health sector.
The meeting reviewed the current healthcare infrastructure, identified local challenges, and discussed ways to address the district’s pressing medical needs.
The forum unanimously approved to grant Saidu Medical Teaching Hospital the status of a Medical Teaching Institution (MTI).
Under the MTI status, the hospital will benefit from an autonomous management system, which includes the formation of a Board of Governors (BoG).
Minister Khaliq-ur-Rehman assured the members of the assembly that the provincial government’s new health policy will address the shortage of doctors, nurses, and other medical staff across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s health institutions.
The Health Minister highlighted that the department has compiled detailed data on staffing requirements and medical equipment, and each hospital will receive resources according to its specific needs.
He also mentioned the role of the Primary Health Care Reform Project, which is actively supporting the health department in filling the gaps in staffing, including doctors, nurses, Lady Health Workers (LHWs), and other essential health professionals.
The health minister approved the demand for upgrading CD Rang Mohalla to RHC level under the Annual Development Program (ADP).
Khaliq-ur-Rehman also emphasized the importance of close monitoring and regular visits to healthcare institutions. He directed the Health Department to provide full support to Swat’s hospitals, taking into account the suggestions and concerns raised by the local assembly members.
Furthermore, the Health Minister announced the formation of a Health Task Force for continuous monitoring and evaluation of healthcare facilities across the province.
This task force will work to identify systemic issues, ensure the strict implementation of health policies, and enhance the functionality of health institutions.
