Khyber Medical University (KMU) on Monday expressed profound grief and anger over the tragic killing of Dr Mehwish Hasnain, who was shot dead by unidentified armed men in Kohat.
According to police, Dr Mehwish was attacked while returning home after performing emergency duty at the DHQ Teaching Hospital KDA Kohat. The incident has plunged not only Kohat but also the wider medical community into mourning.
In the wake of the incident, a condolence meeting was held at KMU where Fateha was offered and special prayers were made for the departed soul.
Participants described the killing of a doctor devoted to serving humanity as deeply tragic and condemnable.
The meeting stated that targeting a medical professional was tantamount to an attack on the entire healthcare system.
The university strongly condemned what it termed a cowardly and brutal act and demanded that the provincial government and law enforcement agencies immediately arrest those involved and bring them to justice to prevent similar incidents in future.
It noted that such incidents spread fear and panic among healthcare workers, who are already serving under challenging conditions.
Expressing concern over growing insecurity faced by healthcare workers, the KMU administration urged the provincial government to take urgent and effective measures to ensure the safety of doctors and other medical staff at hospitals and medical institutions.
The university also conveyed its heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the bereaved family, assuring them of full support during this difficult time.
