A meeting held at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Forest Department reviewed progress on the Dasu Hydropower transmission line project, a major national green energy initiative aimed at strengthening electricity supply to the national grid.
The meeting was chaired by Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan and attended by Secretary Forest Department Junaid Khan and other relevant officials.
Participants were given a detailed briefing on various aspects of the project in line with directives of the provincial cabinet.
Officials informed the meeting that, following a request from the federal government and directions from the provincial cabinet, groundwork was underway to address technical and administrative matters to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
The meeting was told that the Dasu Hydropower Project is a major green energy initiative designed to ensure efficient transmission of electricity to the national grid. The project was being implemented by the National Grid Company of Pakistan under the Ministry of Energy Pakistan with financial assistance from the World Bank.
Officials said the mega hydel project has a total power generation capacity of 4,320 megawatts, which will significantly contribute to meeting the country’s growing energy needs. To facilitate transmission, modern grid stations will also be established in Mansehra and Islamabad.
The meeting was also informed about the environmental benefits of the project, noting that it would help reduce carbon emissions, decrease reliance on fossil fuels and promote environmentally friendly infrastructure.
Officials said two per cent royalty from the project’s total cost would go to the province, while a proposal is under consideration to allocate 0.2pc to the provincial Forest Department as a Forest Development Fund to support forest restoration, conservation and development initiatives.
Addressing the meeting, Mr Jan directed officials to complete all necessary groundwork and present the project before the provincial cabinet for final approval. He emphasised that environmental protection and sustainable use of natural resources must remain central to development initiatives.
He said the provincial government was committed to promoting clean, affordable and environment-friendly energy, adding that a green and clean KP remained among its top priorities.
