Volunteers play vital role in disaster response: Shafi

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan has said that volunteers are the real strength of any society and play a key role in relief and rescue activities during natural disasters and emergencies.
He expressed these views during a visit to the provincial office of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society in Peshawar, where he was received by Provincial Chairman Farzand Ali Wazir.
During the visit, the special assistant was briefed on the organisation’s humanitarian activities and performance in the province. Officials informed him that the Red Crescent was providing immediate relief to victims during natural disasters and emergencies, besides offering free treatment facilities to patients suffering from thalassemia and other diseases. Scholarships for higher education abroad were also being provided to deserving students, he was told.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Jan praised the Red Crescent’s humanitarian services and termed its role during emergencies and natural calamities commendable. He said the establishment of relief camps and provision of first aid during emergencies reflected the true spirit of humanitarian service.
He said the provincial government was taking practical steps to strengthen the capacity of institutions to effectively respond to disasters and emergency situations.
The special assistant assured the government’s support and cooperation with the Red Crescent and other welfare organisations working for humanitarian causes.
Highlighting the importance of public awareness, he said there was a growing need to educate people about first aid, disaster management and emergency response. He also stressed the importance of promoting first aid and emergency response training in educational institutions so that youth could play a constructive role in difficult situations.
