A meeting of the Standing Committee on Local Government, Elections and Rural Development of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was held on Monday at the Provincial Assembly Secretariat, with Chairman MPA Abdul Kabir Khan in the chair.
The meeting was attended by committee members including Suresh Kumar, Askar Parvez, Lal Behari Gopal Singh, Ms Sobia Shahid, Ms Farzana Shireen and Ms Shazia Tamas, along with officials from the Local Government Department, Law Department, and Assembly Secretariat.
The committee reviewed in detail two draft legislations — the “Hindu Marriage Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bill 2026” and the “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Kalash Marriage Bill 2026”. Members discussed legal, social, religious and administrative aspects of the proposed laws, stressing that the legislation should align with the traditions, beliefs and fundamental rights of the respective communities.
During deliberations on the Hindu Marriage Bill, it was noted that amendments to certain clauses were necessary in view of the diversity within the Hindu community. The committee decided to form a subcommittee to consult stakeholders and formulate recommendations for further amendments.
The Kalash Marriage Bill 2026 was also discussed in detail, with members emphasising the need to ensure protection of cultural identity and customary practices of the Kalash community.
The chair directed the relevant authorities to move forward in line with the committee’s recommendations so that the proposed laws are finalized in accordance with community rights, traditions and social requirements.
