The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued a weather alert, forecasting more monsoon rains across the province from July 29 to August 5 and directed all district administrations to take precautionary measures in advance.
According to the PDMA, monsoon currents were expected to affect upper and central parts of the province from July 29, while a western weather system was also likely to intensify from August 1.
The authority warned that upper districts, including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra and Kohistan, may face risks of landslides due to heavy rainfall. Local streams and rivers in these areas are also vulnerable to flash floods.
The PDMA further cautioned that urban flooding may occur in central and plain areas of the province, including Swat, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi and Nowshera.
The authority said heavy rains and strong winds could damage weak structures, electricity poles and billboards. District administrations have been directed to ensure advance safety arrangements in vulnerable areas and for at-risk communities.
Relevant departments have been instructed to continuously monitor rivers, streams and rainwater channels, while rescue teams and necessary equipment should remain available in flood- and landslide-prone areas.
The PDMA advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions and maintain a safe distance of at least 20 feet from rivers and streams. People have also been urged to avoid entering rivers, streams and flood waters during rainfall.
Tourists have particularly been advised to avoid trekking, hiking and camping activities in mountainous areas during heavy rains.
