PESHAWAR
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has purchased 50 additional diesel-hybrid buses for the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system at a cost of Rs2.139 billion, bringing good news for BRT passengers.
According to TransPeshawar on Sunday, 27 of the newly purchased buses will arrive in Peshawar in the next phase, while two buses have been provided by the company as a gift.
With the arrival of new buses, the number of buses available for the BRT service has increased from 244 to 269. Once all the newly purchased buses reach Peshawar, the total fleet is expected to rise to 296 buses.
TransPeshawar also said that five of the existing BRT buses will be allocated for women. Details regarding the routes of these pink buses will be finalized soon.
To address the shortage of buses, the provincial government had been recommended to purchase a total of 100 new buses, including 50 diesel-hybrid and 50 electric buses.
In the first phase, 50 diesel-hybrid buses have been purchased, while the purchase of another 50 electric buses is planned in the second phase. According to TransPeshawar, the estimated total cost of purchasing all 100 buses is Rs3.2 billion.
