A proclaimed offender wanted in cases of murder and extortion was killed during a police encounter in district Charsadda, police said on Tuesday.
The Prang Police received information that the notorious wanted suspect, Imtiaz son of Mumtaz, a resident of Chhoti Pul and originally from Afghanistan, was present near the Kabul River bridge on the motorway service road. Acting on the tip-off, a police team immediately reached the location.
Police said the suspect opened fire upon seeing the police party, prompting officers to retaliate. During the exchange of fire, the wanted criminal was killed on the spot.
Police records revealed that the dead criminal was wanted in the murder case of motorcycle trader Asfandiyar, who was killed on April 28, 2026. He was allegedly involved in extortion activities and had been demanding money from local shopkeepers on a regular basis.
Authorities further stated that the suspect had previously been arrested in eight different criminal cases registered at City, Sardheri, and Prang police stations, including theft, attempted murder, narcotics and other serious offenses.
Following the incident, police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation for possible presence of his accomplices. Evidence was collected from the scene and further investigation is underway.
