Central President of the Awami National Party (ANP), Senator Aimal Wali Khan, has strongly condemned the target killing of prominent religious scholar Maulana Sheikh Idrees in Charsadda, describing the incident as clear evidence of the deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Aimal Wali Khan expressed deep sorrow over the martyrdom of Maulana Sheikh Idrees and the injuries sustained by two security personnel accompanying him. He said that incidents of target killing and terrorism have become routine in the province, while both provincial and federal governments continue to remain “meaningfully silent.”
He termed this silence an implicit admission of failure in ensuring the safety of citizens. “As a result of flawed state policies, Pakhtunkhwa has once again been turned into a powder keg,” he said, adding that no segment of society is safe anymore.
The ANP chief warned that the prevailing situation has made every Pakhtun vulnerable to forces hostile to peace, calling it an alarming development. He urged both the federal and provincial governments to move beyond political point-scoring and take serious, practical measures to restore peace in the region.
“If immediate steps are not taken, the situation may reach a point where people will be forced to ensure their own security, which could lead to even more dangerous consequences,” he cautioned.
Aimal further stated that the hard-earned peace achieved through the sacrifices of ANP workers, civilians, and security personnel is being undermined by “irresponsible and emotional decisions.” He said the return of unrest in Pakhtunkhwa was unacceptable under any circumstances.
He also extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Maulana Sheikh Idrees and prayed for the martyr’s elevated status in the hereafter, as well as a speedy recovery for the injured personnel.
