Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, a senior and influential political leader and President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), has passed away, marking the end of a distinguished public career spanning over four decades.
He was elected the 28th President of AJK in August 2021 and served as the region’s constitutional head. Beginning his political journey in 1983, he became one of the youngest members of the AJK Legislative Assembly and went on to win election nine times.
Barrister Sultan also served as Prime Minister of AJK from 1996 to 2001, held key ministerial positions, and remained a strong advocate for the Kashmir cause on national and international forums.
