The Awami National Party (ANP) has vehemently opposed the federal government’s decision to shut down utility stores nationwide.
ANP Central President, Aimal Wali Khan, condemned the move as “imprudent,” stating, “Instead of alleviating poverty, the federal government is eliminating the poor. The government’s priority has been to starve the people since taking office.”
Khan emphasized that Utility Stores Corporation (USC) was a vital source of relief for the poor amidst inflation, and the closure will affect thousands of livelihoods connected to the Utility Stores Corporation.
People are already struggling to afford two meals a day of bread and essential items.
ANP central president maintained that thousands of workers will become unemployed due to the closure of utility stores.
The government is putting the lives of thousands of employees and their children at risk; he said and added that the economy can never recover with such temporary decisions.
ANP stands with utility stores workers against this decision, Aimal Khan said.
“The government is making people scapegoats instead of reducing expenditure,” Khan criticized, urging the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) led government to reconsider its decision and prioritize the welfare of the poor.
