ISLAMABAD : Supreme Court (SC) has granted bail to Anwar Majeed prime accused in fake accounts case on medical grounds.
The apex court has directed Anwar Majeed to submit passport, bank guarantee amounting to Rs 100 million to registrar office besides extending cooperation to anti corruption watch dog (NAB) in the case.
Court has also ordered that Anwar Majeed name be placed in Exit Control List (ECL).
A two members bench of SC presided over by Justice Mushir Alam took up the case for hearing Wednesday.
NAB prosecutor while raising objection over bail plea of Anwar Majeed during the hearing of the case took the plea that a two members bench cannot hear bail case. Anwar Majeed is under treatment at NICVD from the very first day. NICVD is the best hospital in the country. 15 inquiries and 4 references are running against the accused. He is facing corruption charges of over Rs 4 billion. Bail is being sought on old medical reports.
Munir A Malik counsel for Anwar Majeed argued “ my client is suffering from multiple diseases. It will pose life threat to his client if surgery is conducted in Pakistan. The co-accused has been granted bail while Anwar Majeed is in jail since the last two years. Asif Zardari was granted bail in the sum of Rs 10 million. We have filed bail plea on new grounds.
Justice Qazi Amin remarked 2-membwer bench can hear bail case. Bail should be granted to sick person but he should get treatment in the country. NAB behavior with political accused is different from other accused.
Justice Mushir Alam remarked NAB’s attitude with political accused should not be different from others.
The court while rejecting NAB prosecutor plea for constitution of medical board approved bail plea of Anwar Majeed on the assurance that he will file bank guarantee amounting to Rs 100 million.
The court also ordered that Anwar Majeed name be placed in ECL. The accused will submit his passport to registrar office and cooperate with NAB in the investigation of the case.
The court disposed of the petition.
