Police foiled an attempt to smuggle illegal weapons in the provincial capital and arrested an inter-provincial arms smuggler during an intelligence-based operation in the jurisdiction of Pahari Pura Police Station, officials said on Friday.
According to a press release issued by the Capital City Police Peshawar, snap checking and roadblock inspections have been further tightened across the district on the instructions of senior officers to curb illegal weapons and criminal activity.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of SP Faqirabad Division Resham Jahangir and DSP Faqirabad Circle Ijaz Nabi Khan, while SHO Pahari Pura Police Station Rafiq Khan led the field action.
Police said the suspect, identified as Janas Syed son of Asker Mian, a resident of Swat, was arrested near GT Road Haji Camp Adda following a tip-off. Officials added that he was part of an inter-provincial network involved in transporting illegal weapons using motorcars.
During the operation, police recovered 20 rifles, two pistols and 55 magazines from the vehicle. The car used in the smuggling attempt was also taken into custody.
A case has been registered against the accused, while further investigation is underway from multiple angles, police said.
