Climate change activist Fatima Faraz has said that climatic changes are fundamental threats to sustainable development as its impacts cut across boundaries and across dimensions – including political, economic, and social.
Addressing climate change seminar “Friday for Future” at Peshawar Press Club, on Friday she said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is one of the most vulnerable provinces of Pakistan to the negative impacts of Climate Change, adding that looking into the extreme vulnerability of the Province and country to the negative impacts of Climatic Changes, government must take climate action.
Fatima, who is a 9th grade student spoke to the participants of the seminar that the issue is directly linked to issues such as health, food, nutrition, consumption, water security, livelihood, and energy transformation.
Fridays for Future (FFF) is an international movement of school students who skip Friday classes to participate in demonstrations to demand action from political leaders to take action to prevent climate change and for the fossil fuel industry to transform into renewable energy.
The movement started from August 2018, a 15-year-old Greta Thunberg and other young activists sat in front of the Swedish parliament every school day for three weeks to protest against the lack of action on climate change.
School students around the world have returned to the streets for a global day of climate action. It’s the first Fridays for Future strike since the coronavirus pandemic forced activists to move their protests online.
The Seminar, which was held in Peshawar Press Club, was a part of the activities being held under the name of Friday for Future.
A Number of representatives from social organizations, students from the educational institutions were among the attendants.
Representative in their speeches highlighted that all human and non-human things are in the middle of a pandemic and government with effective policies should take action to minimize its impact.
“The climate crisis is still here, so need to take action and demanded climate action,” Fatima added.
Later on, the representatives of the seminar held a demonstration protest, who carried placards saying climate action in Pakistan.
