Dense fog engulfed several cities of Punjab on Sunday morning, reducing visibility and forcing the Motorway Police to close multiple sections of motorways to ensure the safety of motorists.
According to details, Motorway M-2 was closed from Lahore to Kot Momin, M-3 from Faizpur to Darkhana, M-4 from Pindi Bhatian to Multan, M-5, from Multan to Zahir Pir, and M-11 from Lahore to Sialkot.
Thick fog also engulfed at National Highway in Lahore, Pattoki, Okara, Sahiwal, Chicawatni, Iqbal Nagar, Mian Channu, Khanewal, Multan, and Bahwalpur.
Motorway Police officials said visibility has dropped significantly due to dense fog, increasing the risk of road accidents.
Motorway police advised travellers to use the Grand Trunk Road as an alternative and urged motorists to reduce speed and switch on fog lights while driving. Authorities also appealed to the public to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
A spokesperson of Central Region urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during nighttime when fog conditions worsen. The spokesman further appealed to people to prefer to travel during the day from 10 am to 6 pm.
For those who must travel, motorists have been advised to use fog lights, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and reduce speed. Drivers were also instructed to stay within their lanes and avoid overtaking to prevent accidents.
The spokesperson added that police teams are continuously patrolling and monitoring the situation. Citizens have been advised to stay updated by contacting the Motorway Police helpline 130 or following official social media platforms for the latest traffic situation.
