PESHAWAR
Leaders of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Disabled Rights Movement on Monday urged the Chief Minister Sohail Afridi to personally intervene in resolving long-pending issues faced by persons with disabilities, warning of province-wide protests if their demands were ignored.
Cabinet members of the Rights Movement, Zardad Bulbul, Zawar Noor and Qari Saad, told a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club (PPC) that the disabled community has been seeking restoration of their rights for years under national human rights laws and UN conventions, but their concerns continue to face unnecessary delays.
They said the provincial government has adopted the outdated Children with Disabilities Ordinance 1981 without consulting persons with disabilities, removing many essential facilities included in earlier drafts and contradicting disability laws of other provinces.
The movement presented a charter of demands, calling for immediate halting and amending of the proposed Disability Act in consultation with disability representatives.
