The Election Commission of Pakistan had announced schedule for the election on empty Senate seat vacated by Faisal Vawda.
According to the ECP schedule, the election for the vacant upper house seat will be held on March 9 in the Sindh Assembly building. Candidates could submit their nomination papers from Feb 17 to Feb 19. The first list of the candidates will be released on Feb 21.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held till Feb 24 and the final list of the candidates will be released on March 3. Polling will be started at 9am and will continue till 4pm on March 9, according to the schedule.
“The polling for the vacant senate seat will be held on March 09 in the Sindh Assembly building,” the ECP announced. “The candidates can submit their nomination papers from February 17 to 19,” the ECP said.
“The lists of the candidates will be displayed at the office of the election commission on Feb 21. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on Feb 24, while appeals against the scrutiny decisions will be heard on Feb 28,” the ECP stated.
Ex-PPP senator Vawda challenged his lifelong disqualification from holding any public office by the Election Commission of Pakistan in Islamabad High Court yesterday. Today, the court reserved its verdict on the admissibility of his appeal.
Chief Justice Athar Minallah, on the occasion, asked Vawda’s counsel as to what should be the consequences of submitting a ‘fake’ affidavit. “The Supreme Court (SC), in its verdict, had gone one step ahead and said that criminal proceedings should be initiated in such a case,” he remarked.
