ECP to de-seat PTI chairman from party chairmanship

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday decided to de-seat the PTI chairman from party chairmanship. The decision has been made after the conviction of PTI chairman in the Toshakhana case.
After the meeting of the Election Commission on the current political situation Monday, giving the nod to prompt the process of removing the PTI chairman from his party leadership. The meeting discussed the situation that emerged after the new population census and also deliberated on whether or not to establish new constituencies for the general elections.
According to sources, the ECP consulted on how much delay would occur in the general elections due to the new population census. The legal team briefed the commission on this issue.
On Saturday, Additional Sessions Judge Hamayun Dilawar sentenced the PTI chairman to three years in prison and fined him Rs100,000 after he found guilty of corrupt practices in the Toshakhana case.
After being convicted, the PTI chairman has been disqualified from holding a public office for five years. The court ruled that the PTI chairman will have to undergo more six months in jail in case of non-payment of fine. The Toshakhana case was filed on the basis of a complaint by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), alleging the PTI chairman had deliberately concealed details of the gifts he retained from the Toshaskhana.
The ECP had declared that the former premier had indeed made ‘false statements and incorrect declarations’ regarding the gifts.
