First time ever sunflower has been successfully harvested in the Ghundi area of subdivision Jamrud district Khyber. Under the National Oil Seed Enhancement Program(NOEP),the agriculture department of merged tribal districts on trail base has cultivated sunflower at 500 acre land across the ex-tribal region including the Ghundi area of Jamrud that has successfully grown.
Speaking on the occasion director agriculture merged districts Murad Ali said that with the purpose to increase production of edible oil in the country ,under the PSDP scheme, seeds of the sun flower were provided to the farmers at subsidy rates that produced fruitful results.
As camper to traditional farming, the growers will have benefit of the new crop and the time will come when the country will be self-sufficient in producing edible oil, he opined.
The agriculture district head ZiaulIslam Dawar said that the environment of the tribal districts is favorable for the growing of sun flower therefore the department has taken an initiative to grow it.
The department extends every possible assistance to the farmers in harvesting the sunflower in the area, he remarked. Wajid Ali, a local farmer said that he has cultivated the new crop on the land of eight kanal that has successfully grown.
If seed and fertilizers are provided he is ready to grow it on the rest of his land, he added.
