Babar Azam has come under heavy scrutiny following a string of below-par performances across formats and Salman Butt seems to have an answer for the former captain. Babar’s struggles were evident during the three-match T20I series against Australia, where he managed just 47 runs at an average of 15.66 and a strike rate of 142.42.
Despite the criticism, Salman expressed confidence in Babar’s class and backed him to rediscover his form. “Babar Azam is a high-class player and should focus on smart, percentage-based cricket instead of slogging,” Salman stated, emphasizing the importance of a strategic approach to batting.
The former opener highlighted Babar’s pivotal role as an anchor, advising him to build long innings and let the team revolve around his contributions. “His role is to anchor the innings, score big hundreds, and let the team play around him,” Salman remarked. Salman also urged Babar to elevate his fitness level to further enhance his game.
He emphasized that developing high-percentage shots rather than relying on unconventional strokes would be more beneficial for the star batter in the long run.
“He should work on taking his fitness to the next level and adding high-percentage shots to his game. While modern cricket sometimes requires big shots, calculated strokes, and improved fitness will be far more effective than trying uncharacteristic shots like the ramp or reverse sweep,” he advised.
Despite his suggestions, Salman was quick to acknowledge Babar’s abilities, noting that the batter understands his game better than anyone else. “At the end of the day, Babar is a great player, and he knows what’s best for him,” he added.
