Chairman of the Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that protecting the planet is one of the biggest shared challenges today and requires joint efforts, awareness, and practical steps.
In his message on Earth Day, he said this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights that the future of Earth depends on the collective actions of people around the world.
He said that climate change is worsening globally, and its effects are clearly visible in Pakistan. Rising temperatures, water shortages, air pollution, and deforestation are serious threats to the environment and future generations.
Gilani said these challenges cannot be solved by policies alone and require changes in individual behaviour and daily habits.
He added that small actions such as planting trees, saving water and energy, reducing plastic use, and keeping surroundings clean can together make a big difference.
He also appreciated the role of educational institutions, civil society, and especially young people in spreading awareness and promoting environmentally friendly practices.
Highlighting the role of the Senate, Gilani said the Upper House has made progress through laws, committee work, and policy oversight. He added that several initiatives to reduce pollution, protect natural resources, and promote sustainable development are under consideration.
He said Pakistan’s future depends on a clean and safe environment and stressed the need to leave a better planet for coming generations.
He urged people to treat Earth Day not just as a symbolic event but as a continuous commitment to an environmentally responsible lifestyle.
Gilani said that with collective and positive efforts, a sustainable and secure future can be achieved, which reflects our true responsibility towards the planet.
