PESHAWAR: Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi on Tuesday reviewed progress on the Peshawar Northern Bypass project during a visit to the project camp office.
Member National Highway Authority (NHA) KP Ashfaq Ahmed briefed the governor on the ongoing construction work, project phases and financial requirements.
The governor directed authorities to ensure the highest standards of quality in construction and said that the aesthetic value of the city should be preserved through the construction of flyovers and reinforced earth walls. He instructed that completed sections of the project be opened for traffic without delay.
He said an inauguration ceremony for one phase of the project would be held in July and added that the federal minister and NHA chairman would be approached to resolve outstanding issues.
Mr Kundi assured full cooperation regarding security arrangements and emphasised the need for plantation work around the project area. He noted that traffic pressure in the city would increase further in the future and said the Northern Bypass would play a key role in facilitating transport and commercial activity in the province.
He said the project had been delayed for a long time due to land acquisition issues and court cases, adding that its early completion was essential for regional development. He expressed hope that the project would be completed by the end of the year.
During the briefing, officials informed the governor that the 30-kilometre-long project comprises five packages and will pass through Peshawar and Khyber districts. Construction work is currently underway on bridges and underpasses, with efforts being made to complete the project by October 2026.
Officials said security challenges existed but construction work would continue, including round-the-clock efforts to meet deadlines. The NHA is also exploring alternative funding sources.
It was further stated that the prime minister had directed the early completion of the project. Officials said an additional Rs8.4 billion was required for completion, while an immediate provision of Rs4 billion was necessary.
General Manager Construction NHA Ehtesham-ul-Haq and other officials were also present on the occasion.
