Govt decides to abolish cross subsidy of Rs140 billion for gas consumers

Government has assured IMF that cross subsidy of Rs 140 billion granted to the gas consumers will be abolished till January 2027.
As per media reports, later the relief will be given to consumers on the basis of their income instead of use of gas . Data of Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) will be used in this regard.
According to senior officials of Petroleum division gas is provided on lower tariff to protected and Non protected consumers in the prevailing system. While burden of this relief is borne by industries, commercial consumers, CNG stations, cement sector and those consuming more gas.
Now this system will be abolished and uniform average rate will be charged to all consumers. Financial assistant will be provided to low income families directly.
Authorities said gas tariff is Rs 1750 per MMBtu at present. But protected consumers are paying tariff far less than this.
