Sindh Minister for Works & Services and Prisons, Ali Hassan Zardari, paid a surprise visit to Central Jail Karachi on Saturday, with a special focus on the Women’s Jail, to review facilities, security arrangements, and overall prison management.
During the inspection, the Minister interacted with jail staff and police officials, seeking firsthand details about their duties and performance. He visited different sections of the jail, evaluating cleanliness, living conditions, and administrative practices.
At the jail canteen, Mr. Zardari personally checked official rate lists and directed the administration to ensure strict monitoring of expiry dates and prices of food items. He stressed that the quality and quantity of meals for inmates must meet official standards and be regularly inspected.
Reviewing the modern facilities, the Minister inspected the video-link courtroom used for virtual hearings and examined the functioning of the online system introduced for prisoner management.
He also met with families of inmates and listened to their concerns regarding the visitation process. Assuring them of redress, Mr. Zardari warned that negligence, misconduct, or bribery by any jail official would not be tolerated, and strict legal action would be taken against those found guilty.
Prison authorities gave the Minister a detailed briefing on security measures, rehabilitation initiatives, and administrative challenges. Later, Mr. Zardari met with inmates directly, reiterating the Sindh government’s commitment to protecting their legal rights and providing facilities in accordance with prison laws.
The Minister was accompanied by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Ashraf Jatoi during the visit.
