Following the emergence of new HIV cases among children in Karachi, concerns have been raised regarding the ban on 10cc syringes. The Pediatric Association has called for a review of the decision by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to prohibit these syringes.
Chairman of the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG), Professor Dr. Khalid Shafi, has written an urgent letter to DRAP, stating that 10cc syringes are indispensable for the treatment of children and newborn patients.
The letter emphasized that a complete ban on 10cc syringes could hinder pediatric care, particularly in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and pediatric wards, where their use is essential.
Medical experts have demanded that measures to prevent HIV transmission should be based on scientific evidence. They have also proposed the formation of a consultative committee comprising medical experts and the Pediatric Association to exempt 10cc syringes from the ban.
Experts further stressed that while preventive measures against HIV are necessary, the continuity of treatment for children must also be ensured.
